Designing
with AI
Understand AI and learn how it can serve as a powerful tool in your creative toolkit, under the guidance of Derrick Schultz, Designer and Post-AI Artist.
Why take this course?
Capabilities and Limitations
Understand the current capabilities and limitations of LLMs, image generators, and classifiers. You will leave this class not just having used the tools, but understanding why they work the way they do.
Enhance Control Over AI Systems
Learn how to control these often unruly tools through the use of prompting, image references and training your own models.
Shape AI Through Design
Consider and discuss how design can influence the direction of AI tools through branding, experience design and other storytelling initiatives.
What are you
going to learn
in this course?
How is AI changing our approach to work? What do we even mean when we say “AI”?
A general discussion of the history of AI tools and how we got to where we are with them.
How do we talk about AI as designers? What are the right and wrong ways to use AI?
This section will act not only as a discussion on the ethical implications of AI, but also how we as designers shape how our audiences approach AI. For Brand Designers, how do we brand these tools? For Product designers, what affordances can we offer with these new experiences?
Classifiers
Classifiers were the first truly useful AI tool and are still vastly underutilized. Consider how everyday tasks for designers could be simplified by sorting, organizing, and describing everything around them. This discussion will cover 'confidence scores' and the benefits of training a classifier for personalized use.
Large Language Models (LLMs)
By now everyone has used ChatGPT. But why does it work the way it does? We’ll explore LLMs: how they’re trained, and why ChatGPT blew up when others didn’t. We’ll look at many of the underlying features of LLMs that are often hidden. And then we’ll try out a handful of popular LLMs and explore the concept of “prompting.”
Image Generators
Currently, image generators are among the most prominent and contentious tools in visual media. This discussion will explore the reasons behind their polarized reception and consider how creating a custom, small-scale image generator may offer a different perspective. Additionally, we will examine emerging interfaces that provide greater control beyond traditional text-based inputs.
