Decoding Identities first class student showcase

Aprender Design

School

Instructed by Carlos Bocai (Base) and Julia B. Aguiar (Jones Knowles Ritchie), Decoding Identities is a six-week course focused on creating visual identity systems. It’s a collective exercise where students engage in discussions that deconstruct the notion of "good design" by delving into methods, category codes, and real case studies.

To apply the learnings and discussions, students are given a group project to present at the end of the course. With 1:1 mentorship, each group is tasked with designing a visual identity system for a music playlist. Since the playlists vary in genre, each comes with its own set of challenges, and students are free to choose their preferred subject.

Through this project, each group goes through the entire process of creating a unique system, from concept development to creative execution. Below are some highlighted projects from the first international class.

Perreo, by Nubia Navarro, Juliana Covezdy and Bader Salahuddin.

“Perreo” Reggaeton playlist was designed to showcase an engaging visual identity.

The system was crafted around three key pillars: Soulful Heat (to emanate warmth), Energy Exchange (to capture dynamic beats) and Dancefloor Connections (to seamlessly blend music with movements).

Disorder, by Cosme Cruz and Mic Anderson.

“Disorder” is a visual identity system for an alternative music playlist. The only thing more universal than culture is the need for a counter-culture. For every genre of music in the world, there’s someone who wants to do it differently. The visuals for this playlist need to live in the tension between standing out from the crowd and maintaining a look and feel that can be universally applied.

Trópico, by Julian Mancini, Makisa Bronson, and Victoria Rabelo Gerson.

The Trópico brand identity system is grounded in the core visual and verbal themes that characterize MPB. The system embodies and interprets the key features of collective memory, multidimensionality, and political rebellion in a new way, while simultaneously emphasizing MPB’s groundbreaking nature as a musical genre.
